"Listen to the gentle whispers of hope..."   ...Charles D. Brodhead

When a pet is diagnosed with cancer, the question we hear most often is, “Is there anything we can do?”  Fortunately, the answer is YES!

At Morris Animal Hospital, we are continually inspired by the healing power of our patients.  However, cancer does not disappear without intervention.  Your pet needs you to take charge of his/her care, and to learn all your options.  Each case of cancer is unique, and we tailor each treatment plan to fit the individual needs of the patient and his/her family.

Does my pet have cancer?

It is impossible to know if your pet has cancer without a diagnosis from a trained veterinarian.  Cancer symptoms may not indicate actual cancer; any of the signs of cancer below may be the result of common infections or injuries.  To properly treat your pet, it is imperative that you seek a medical diagnosis if you suspect that he/she has cancer.

According to the Veterinary Cancer Society the Ten Common Signs of Cancer in Small Animals are:

  • Abnormal swellings that persist or continue to grow
  • Sores that do not heal
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Bleeding or discharge from any body opening
  • Offensive odor
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Hesitation to exercise or loss of stamina
  • Persistent lameness or stiffness
  • Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating
Treatment options

Thankfully, there are lots of treatment options for pets with cancer. Our veterinarians will work with you and your pet to determine what type of treatment is most appropriate. Available options include:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation
  • Cryotherapy
  • Palliative or hospice care
